Michail Kyriazanos: Two One-Piece Pipe Set with Box Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-629-0141
A native of Paros Island, Michail Kyriazanos has been carving pipes for over a decade, following a traditional outlook on design that shows a deep appreciation for Anglo-French classics, all while adding his own bit of style. Briar stems fall in line with these conventions, hearkening back to old French pipes that featured stems and stummels made from the burl, though these are less often crafted by artisan carvers. What's even more seldom crafted are pipes that integrate stem and stummel into one piece, carving the entire thing out of briar and offering lines entirely unbroken by any added material. Kyriazanos is no stranger to this kind of craftsmanship, however, and displays his talent for rendering these singular pipes by presenting us with this two-pipe set and handsome presentation box.
The first pipe is a classic Rhodesian, in this case possessed of a tapering stretch of domed, rounded shank that steps down into the tapering stem, as if stylistically evoking the look of a pipe with a horn mount. This is quite the feat, and Michail has even outlined the space where the stem would be married to said mount, carving a thin, shallow channel around the shank face to drive home the illusion of this pipe's construction. The lines of this piece are extremely well-developed, the heel sweeping forward and carrying the fore of the bowl with it, lending the composition a demure sense of gesture and momentum. The bowl itself stands atop this heel and flares out to a pair of crisp beadlines before tapering to the rim, the walls of this under-four-and-a half-inch Nosewarmer piece, providing plenty of space to showcase the vibrant auburn stain of the stummel, revealing dense streaks of flame grain through all the flanks.
The second pipe in this set is a Bulldog, a timeless profile that has a rich history, and Kyriazanos has done an excellent job in paying tribute to that history, carving a rendition that is every bit as nuanced and detailed as its more conventional brethren. The shank and stem here are diamond shaped, as is the standard for this silhouette, and Michail's steady hand and skill for carving straight lines is prominently displayed in the crisp ridges that frame the four panels of the combination. The heel here is much sharper than that of the Rhodesian, thanks to the ridge on the underside, additionally framing the outline of the aft and drawing the eye to the transition to appreciate as much of the composition as possible. Atop this heel stands a bowl that flares out to a pair of well-defined beadlines, this duo so close together that they're separated by just a thin outcropping of briar which further firms up the look of the pipe as a whole, marking the taper to the rim with striking panache. Dressed in a partial sandblast, the stummel proper is shrouded in an inky stain and rippling growth rings, while the stem is left smooth, displaying beautiful grain and defining its presence from the rest of the briar.-John McElheny
