Nate King: Smooth Elephant's Foot with Bamboo (285)
Product Number: 002-579-0056
At first glance, one would likely mistake this one-part architectural, one-part organic design for a highly regarded piece by some Japanese carver. The cleanliness of line, the distribution of proportion, even the rhythm of the pulsating knuckles of bamboo all seem to suggest such an attribution, yet it is not, in fact, a Japanese pipe. No, this beautifully framed, elegant take on the Elephant's Foot was crafted by Nate King.
Simply put, this is quite a departure from Nate's usual, muscular, stout approach, and even farther from his highly stylized Steam Punk and Gear Punk designs. Foremost, it's simply not a design we've seen a whole lot of from Nate in the past. The last one, and only one by our records, we received appeared on the site mid-last year: a fairly compact design with plumper, more cheek-like panels lining either flank. As you can see, this is something completely different — featuring more defined panels cascading down either flank, a trimmer style of shank and transition, a two knuckle bamboo extension, and a more lithe, elegant silhouette overall. Those aforementioned panels act as dividers of sorts, framing a column of tight crossgrain to either side of the bowl, while allowing the convex fore to shine with brilliant whorls of birdseye.
If you're familiar with Nate's work or fond of the Japanese aesthetic, this exceptional interpretation is one you'll want lining your pipe rack for decades to come. Beautiful work.
