Nate King: Smooth Dublin Churchwarden with Bamboo (382)
Product Number: 002-579-0090
There's a certain balance between bowl, shank, and stem that must be achieved in any Churchwarden configuration, and it's one which Nate King has struck at quite neatly with this pipe — albeit perhaps not the way you might expect. Rather than elongating the form with a lengthy mouthpiece, Nate has here incorporated five knuckles of pale bamboo to create that extension, keeping the stem itself quite short and tidy. These have been paired to a trumpeting Dublin bowl, with its base notched to allow it to sit firmly, as well as adding a touch of dynamism to its forward cant. Its finish is nothing to scoff at either, with a great deal of flame grain on display around the bowl, and a touch of the briar's natural plateau left on the rim to carry the organic nature of the bamboo through the entire piece. Lightweight and sturdy, it's a sure to make an excellent reading companion.
