Old Dominion: Virginia Planter Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-631-0001

Old Dominion pipes began with a nearly extinct heirloom Indian corn which brothers Bob and Bill Savage, and Laurel, the latter's wife, found to produce a particularly sweet, unique cornmeal. Bringing this breed back from the brink, and finding a healthy demand for it from amateur cooks and professional chefs alike, they also soon found themselves with a lot of large, colorful cobs piling up as well. Turning up archeological evidence that their Pungo Creek Mills farmland had been the site of a clay and cob pipe making operation dating back to the colonial period, an answer as to what to do with all these distinctive corn cobs presented itself.

That answer, of course, was to hand-craft them into sweet-smoking cobs fitted with bamboo cane stems - pipes just like those the planters who'd come before them had enjoyed over two centuries ago.

Note: All measurements listed are approximate, as there will be some variation from individual pipe to individual pipe.

Good, rustic corncob

Product: Old Dominion Virginia Planter
For starter, mine actually arrived with the stem more or less falling out. A dab of superglue later and it's back to business, and business is sweet. I do actually think this cob makes the tobacco sweeter, and of course it absorbs a good bit of excess moisture. I like it for my aromatics, and the couple I've tasted from it have been more full in flavour. The outer texture is quite rough, rather like a freshly eaten cob, unlike the MM cobs I'm used to. I think everyone should try an Old Dominion cob at least once....Read More

I've own several of these and I've had them for a number of years. They smoke fabulously. They break in quickly, and the draw is just perfect. As far as the stems go, over time they do become somewhat loose. I remedied that by applying beeswax to the end and melting it over a heat gun and pushed it into the stummel while still melted and giving a few twists. Holds the stem in place nicely....Read More

Not a bad pipe, but the stems aren't robust enough to clench. Also, the stem fell out and had to be glued in place. Not one I grab very often, even for yard work or a walk around the block. For the price, one could get 2 or 3 Missouri Meerschaums, but I do like that it doesn't have any plastic in it....Read More
love this pipe

I have two of these and they both smoke great. I never really liked M.M. cobs that much. But I find these O.D. cobs great. The biggest issue is the draw. I personally find M.M. cobs too open in their draw and to also need a breaking in period. And for 20 bucks why not get one at worst you'll have a pipe you can smoke when fishing or hiking and not be sad if you lose it....Read More
This is not a MM, and rather disappointing

Product: Old Dominion Virginia Planter
This pipe is not as good as you might expect. I had hoped to have a good experience as I would with my MM. The shank is very thin and pipe draws poorly. I bought f 5 of them and now I am so sorry I did. Beware! Just go back to MM and get a good corncob, if you like corncobs as much as I do. This looks pretty but is not a good smoke....Read More
Great Smoker

Product: Old Dominion Virginia Planter
As someone who has smoked through my fair share of MM pipes, I have always had a distasteful opinion of their plastic stem. This Virginia Planted is one great smoker. The bamboo stem neutral in flavor and all the Old Dominion pipes take a pipe cleaner easily. This pipe can give you a good long smoke. Utility, value, quality made. There's nothing fancy about this, just a great pipe....Read More
