Ping Zhan: Sandblasted Asymmetric Bent Apple
Product Number: 002-654-0037
The bent Apple is not a shape that we usually think of when the word "asymmetric" comes up. The Blowfish is a more obvious choice, its complex lines and paneling making for a shape that lends itself to a slight, charming style of asymmetry. Chinese carver Ping Zhan has made this asymmetric bent Apple work splendidly, however, its plump and well-rounded form not losing its appeal — indeed, at first glance, the details of its asymmetry are difficult to spot. It's only from above and below that the sideways ebb of its shank and stem becomes apparent, while the bowl's additional soft bulge of briar at the fore is almost visually indiscernible, and only reveals itself in hand. Add to that his usual eye for details, including a small patch of plateau at the shank-end, which has been extended through the stem base thanks to Ping's careful shaping, and this is a piece that is as charming as it is subtly complex. It's one that begs to be examined closely, time and time again.- Rachel DuBose
