Ropp: Etudiant Smooth (J14)
Product Number: 002-598-5146
Sebastien Beo made a particular bent Billiard a while back, the shaping of which was very particularly old-school French; it actually kind of resembled a Dublin, with slight taper from rim to heel when viewed from the front. Beo, of course, was based out of an old, old little factory in St. Claude, where Sebastien Beaud probably still has drawings and shape master-copies dating back generations.
As for Ropps, they come to us from Antoine Grenard, whose Chapuis-Comoy factory happens to have access to a lot of French pipes that are in some cases generations old. As such I probably should have expected that eventually some version of this distinctively French variation of the bent Billiard shape would turn up — and so it has. And now I'll probably end up getting one of these, as well.- Andrew Wike
