Ropp: Mid-Century Sandblasted (M613) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-598-16472
As a member of Ropp's Mid-Century line, the "M613" showcases a decidedly Danish sense of style, with a sense of elegant softness about its silhouette. An acute transition gives way to a lifting shank that meets a flaring stem base, punctuating said stem's step down into a demurely curving saddle bit, its stance offering a comfortable smoking posture and fluid sense of line. The bit of firmness that the flared stem base lends this pipe is balanced well by the more plump and curvaceous presence of the bowl, its walls standing atop a pronounced heel. The bowl itself is akin to certain interpretations of the Acorn, with a defined flare out to rim that's possessed of a rounded edge, affording it a comfortable feel in hand and shapely outline.
Ropp's Mid-Century series embodies the intersection between the French and Scandinavian pipe making traditions. After WWII, Scandinavian pipe production skyrocketed, infusing the craft with minimalist designs and functional aesthetics. The burgeoning Scandinavian workshops turned to France, the progenitor of pipe tradition, to supply them with the tools and knowledge necessary for escalating the modern pipe making movement. The Mid-Century series is comprised of old-stock stummels originally shaped during that exciting time, which were recently finished at the historic Chapius-Comoy factory. Furthermore, the shapes showcase iconic Scandinavian design cues like sweeping, gestural profiles and towering bowls. Additionally, every Mid-Century pipe wears one of Ropp's signature finishes, either a chocolatey sandblast or smooth auburn stain, with this piece being dressed handsomely in the former.-John McElheny
