S. Bang: Smooth Bent Apple (UN) (1829)
Product Number: 002-816-0001
Svend Bang dreamed of a pipemaking workshop similar to Preben Holm's, one that would crank out large quantities of Danish pipes. His two carvers, Ulf Noltensmeier and Per Hansen, wanted to keep production low and maintain the absolute highest quality possible. Per and Ulf won, as you can see here, and in the 34 years that they have run the shop, standards have only improved. This piece offers stunning birdseye in the unmistakable contrast stain and high-gloss, spectacular finish of S. Bang. With a beefy shank and slightly-tucked transition, the visual weight of the pipe is centered rather than placed primarily on the bowl. The stummel is the main event, with the short saddle stem no distraction from the briar. Please note the transition from bowl to stem; it is classically S. Bang. The cheeks of the bowl maintain the bowl shaping while the broad shank follows the underside curvatures in complementary fashion, simultaneously providing a feeling of separate elements while also rendering an impression of a single piece, like those images in which you see a sailboat one way and a lighthouse if you shift your concentration. Weird, maybe, but very cool.- Chuck Stanion
