S. Bang: Smooth Bent Apple (UN) (1832)
Product Number: 002-816-0004
Designed by Ulf Noltensmeier, this bent Apple shows off some of his charming, elegant shaping techniques in stylish form. With a plump bowl and lifting heel up front, and rising, tapering shank behind, the grace that this piece exudes in profile is not just pleasing to the eye, but well-balanced in hand, while the transition creates a subtle cheeking to the rear of the bowl. Whether the shape complements the grain, or the grain the shape, is up in the air — either way, the lines of the shape are neatly matched to the wealth of flame grain on display, climbing the bowl in bold licks, and dressing the shank with tiger stripes of vivid detail. None of this would be noteworthy, of course, without one of Bang's sleek and well-executed finishes, its warm hues creating an inviting presentation from rim to bit.- Rachel DuBose
