S. Bang: Smooth Billiard (PH) (1834)
Product Number: 002-816-0006
If you've ever thought it might be nice to own a high-grade, Danish interpretation of the classic Billiard, you are in luck. Here's one now, and it's an S. Bang, no less. While it's often difficult to recognize the difference between Per Hansen's and Ulf Noltensmeier's pipes, Ulf has a reputation for offering more in traditional shapes, though he is preposterously capable of the differently creative design aspects of non-traditional shapes, as Per is of traditionals. Here we see a Billiard that is unmistakably Danish in heritage, and likewise unmistakable in finish as S. Bang. With a Brandy-esque aspect to its rising taper, the bowl is deeply rounded at the base, with the transition (often identified by pipemakers as the most difficult part of carving) perfectly connecting shank and bowl. The shank itself tapers ever-so-subtly to the mouthpiece, which itself tapers to the lip button. The stain, of course, is the famous double process contrast that makes the grain pop. The word elegance is the best descriptor here; this is a pipe that would be at home at the coronation of an emperor or while watching made-for-TV movies, and it will make the owner happy under any circumstances.- Chuck Stanion
