S. Bang: Smooth Bent Apple with Silver (PH) (1836)
Product Number: 002-816-0008
Svend Bang made a few pipes, perhaps a couple of dozen, but they didn't look like this. In fact, they were pretty awful. His brilliance was in business, and perhaps his greatest achievement was to recognize the talents of Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier, and to let them make pipes the way they wanted, though it was a constant battle, with Svend wanting quicker production and Per and Ulf arguing for higher production standards at slow speeds. 35 years later, it's easy to see that pipes like the one pictured here are of substantially more interest. This bent Apple by Per features the quintessential scalloped sterling ring that aficionados recognize as a hallmark of S. Bang. On this pipe, the orientation of the scallops blend beautifully with the tapered stem and lead the eye to the stummel, which is a marvel. A palm-filling, spherical Apple shape with high transition and short shank, its visual weight is all up front, lending it a sense of forward propulsion. The undercurve is a sweeping line of gradual and natural degrees, as are the lines of the bowl itself. The chamfered rim is an excellent detail for the moderately thin top. The grain is wide and somewhat loose, but oriented for the curvature of the bowl in a stunning way, heightening the perception of geometrical curve. No angle is uninteresting. Look at this pipe from above, below, front, back or heel, and you'll find design elements that will make you stop breathing momentarily.- Chuck Stanion
