S. Bang: Smooth Bent Apple (UN) (1874)
Product Number: 002-816-0012
S. Bang pipes are carved by the Danish duo Ulf Noltensmeier and Per Hansen. Though each piece is made by one of the two carvers, S. Bang pipes share a common aesthetic, easily recognizable and steeped in the Danish tradition in which both Noltensmeier and Hansen are well versed — between them, their study of the craft has taken them to to workshops of Preben Holm, Anne Julie, and of course, Svend Bang, who passed the mantle that is S. Bang to the pair after Svend retired in 1984.
This bent Apple here was fashioned by Ulf and beautifully represents S. Bang's conventional mélange of genteel shaping with muscular proportions. The Apple is the perfect shape for such an aesthetic — the plump waistline of this rendition giving an even more organic fullness to the design. It sits naturally in hand, marked by a gently curling underside and hearty transition that's well proportioned relative the bowl. Dressed in a vivid, Danish-style contrast stain, feathery straight grain and dizzying birdseye are on full display, the warm, red-gold hue making the Apple form all the more delectable.-Truett Smith
