S. Bang: Smooth Bent Egg with Boxwood (UN) (1877)
Product Number: 002-816-0015
I've said before that the work of a truly great artisan (or artisans, in the case of S. Bang) is a tedious balance between two seemingly antithetical abstractions. As far as the famous duo are concerned, it's a case of overt substance complemented by a sense of lithe, active elegance. This bent Egg from Ulf Noltensmeier is a gorgeous example, as it maintains a lively sense of implied energy, manifested through the forward-reaching bowl and easy curve enveloping the underside in profile. The heel comes to something of an understated point just at the bowl's fore, and the muscular, aftward-reaching shank gives way to a broad mount of pale boxwood. Finished in one of the pair's brilliant contrasts, there's plenty of beautifully highlighted grain to enjoy, too.- Daniel Bumgardner
