S. Bang: Smooth Blowfish with Boxwood (PH) (1882)
Product Number: 002-816-0020
One of S. Bang's signature shapes, this Blowfish was made by Per Hansen, and it's a beauty. Characterized by a singular ridgeline traveling from the bottom left end of the shank all the way to the rim's fore, the feature not only provides a consistent foundation upon which the rest of the shape seems to be built, but also acts as a border, separating the dizzying birdseye on the left side from the cross grain of the underside, which then explodes into even more birdseye on the right flank. The teardrop shank, while causing the ridgeline, also adds a dose of asymmetry to the piece, which is then balanced out by the off-set ferrule of boxwood at the shank-end. It's another stunning pipe, yet again, from S. Bang, full of grace and poise and seamlessly blending rigidity and softness in a complete, consistent package.-Truett Smith
