S. Bang: Smooth Bent Dublin with Boxwood (PH) (1883)
Product Number: 002-816-0021
An elegant and easy-flowing, albeit forthright stoutly-realized bent Dublin shape, this fellow from Per Hansen of S. Bang makes use of a sweeping teardrop ridge traveling the length of the briar at the left flank. Along with defining the tightly knit gesture of the form overall, said line also serves to divide cross-grain from birdseye, allowing for a vast sea of the stuff to live along the leftward region. Along with more lively streaks of grain at the rim, it's all highlighted by one of the duo's strikingly warm contrast finishes, further complemented by a mount of honey-blonde boxwood at the shank end, faced off diagonally and tapering toward the teardrop ridge. The gently downturned saddle bit presents a touch of implied negative space, offering an interesting sense of balance in profile. Altogether, I'd say this is quite an impressive number from one of the finest makers around.- Daniel Bumgardner
