S. Bang: Smooth Bent Apple with Silver (UN) (1952)
Product Number: 002-816-0023
35 years ago, the two workers in Svend Bang's workshop, Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier, were handed the keys to the shop upon Svend's retirement and, while they kept the S. Bang moniker, transformed the brand into one that's since become synonymous with high-grade, artisan-made pipes. Catering toward a Danish classic style that's marked by robust proportions, exquisite finishes, and stellar silver work, the carving duo offers some of the finest smoking instruments on the market.
In this piece, Ulf presents a compact bent Apple that's sure to capture the attention of anyone drawn to traditional Danish pipes. Sinuous of S-curve through the shank and mouthpiece, the slender saddle stem forces the visual weight toward the stummel, curling lithely into the shank as it flares toward the transition. Here, said transition is low-set, extending a touch below the bowl to create some supple cheeking before lifting through the heel to cant the bowl forward. Plump of waistline and affably rounded in hand, the bowl features stout insulating walls, adorned in a contrast stain that brings out the best of the wrapping band of cross grain and birdseye below. Accented at the shank end with one of S. Bang's signature, scalloped bands of sterling silver, it's a piece that exemplifies the Danish duo's work, making it perfect for a first time collector or well established collection alike.-Truett Smith
