S. Bang: Smooth Bent Dublin (PH) (1957)

Product Number: 002-816-0028

While this bent Dublin from S. Bang does well to showcase the Danish duo's conventional use of muscular proportions, supple curves, and stout forms, it's a bit more crisp of line compared to their other, more softly rounded offerings. Much of that crispness comes from Per Hansen fashioning a Calabash-esque, inflated rim, marked by a firm ridgeline about the top of the bowl. Echoing this hard line are the ridges along the flanks of the shank, curling across the top of the stem base before dissipating up the sides of the bowl.

Broadly flaring toward the rim and easy of transition, almost Horn-like, this piece is a delight in hand, grounded upon the underside's consistent curve from stem base to rim fore. The shape in profile is classically Danish and expertly fashioned, matched by one of S. Bang's signature contrast stains to bring out the best of the briar's windswept grain. What's most intriguing and alluring about this piece, though, is only evident when viewed from above — Hansen has fashioned the rim to be more elliptical yet has canted the foci in relation to the shank and stem's axis, lending the form an accenting dose of asymmetry that, once noticed, can't help but define the piece and make it all the more special.
