S. Bang: Smooth Billiard (PH) (1958)
Product Number: 002-816-0029
When Danish artisans on the order of S. Bang make classic shapes, there's always a happy outcome, as seen with this Billiard. The term "Billiard" seems inadequate for a pipe of this gravitas. Not to say it's large; it is not, but it has an aspect of importance in its modified aesthetic. The extra cheeking at the transition is expected in pipes of the Danish school, but Per Hansen, the maker of this pipe for S. Bang, has found the perfect angles, not too steep, not too shallow, for maintaining the shape of the bowl at the heel without overemphasizing the artistic intent. Grain-wise, birdseye is centered on the heel and populous on the curved Danish rim, while the spectacular contrast stain helps applaud the dynamic quality of the grain throughout the bowl. A taper of shank and stem avoid abrupt angles and lead the eye gently back to the bowl and all of that remarkable grain, all in a moderately sized pipe of surpassing craftsmanship.- Chuck Stanion
