S. Bang: Smooth Billiard (PH) (1960)
Product Number: 002-816-0031
This is the sort of pipe one thinks about when fantasizing about having only one pipe to smoke on a desert island. If it was this one, most of us might be content. Well, not content. We'd always want more pipes. But this piece would go a long way toward making us feel better. Yes, it's classic, but in the way only Per Hansen of S. Bang, with his more than 50 years of experience, can execute. More bowl-centric than generally seen from the Danish school, the transition is low, though it provides plenty of cheeking, and the round shank extends straight from the heel to the tapered black mouthpiece. The rim is gently convex, and the coloration of the bowl is pure S. Bang: a perfectly applied contrast stain delineates the individual strands of grain climbing the bowl on all flanks. The chamber walls are not excessively thick, helping the pipe maintain a low weight, but they are certainly more than thick enough to insulate your fingers from the burning contents within. Both classic and modern, and from one of the greatest pipemaking workshops in history, this is a piece to make other briars envious.- Chuck Stanion
