S. Bang: Smooth Apple with Boxwood (PH) (1982)
Product Number: 002-816-0041
A relatively short piece with plenty of bowl presence, this Apple by Per Hansen of S. Bang offers the classic shape modified by the eyes and hands of a world-class pipemaker with more than 50 years of experience carving some of the most sought-after and admired pipes in existence. Perhaps the least important element here is the boxwood fitment, but even it is a remarkable specimen, with better boxwood grain than I've seen elsewhere, ever. The rim is gently rounded, as is typical of the Danish school, but that rounding is so subtle that the pipe must be shifted in the light to appreciate it. The cheeking of the bowl at the transition beautifully maintains the curvature of the bowl while maintaining the sturdy, muscular proportions of the shank. The lauded S. Bang contrast finish exceeds the finest raiments of emperors and seems to follow the curve of the bowl from whatever angle it's viewed. Relatively short, but certainly a full-sized pipe, this is a smoking instrument that promises extraordinary smoking characteristics in a practical shape that's so beautifully rendered it's difficult to see as more utilitarian than artistic. But it's meant to be smoked, and Per will be disappointed if you don't fire it up and enjoy it.- Chuck Stanion
