Sam Cui: Smooth Billiard with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-687-0012
Straight Billiards are perhaps the most common classical shape reproduced by independent artisans. Be it Danish, Japanese, American, or English, this is a form that's practically ubiquitous in the pipe making community. That being said, it doesn't quite follow that that ubiquity prevents any sort of originality in a pipe maker's own individual interpretation. There are tons of ways an artisan can put his or her own spin on the Billiard design, perhaps adding a touch more taper to the bowl, or including alternative mediums into the composition as a whole. Sam Cui has proven that in spades here in this rendition: a gorgeous, Danish/Japanese inspired Billiard with a supple softness to the bowl, an asymmetric crown of craggy plateau, and a two-knuckle shank extension of pale bamboo. He's paid careful attention to things like the distribution of visual weight, the rhythm and spacing of the bamboo itself, and even the orientation of the block's natural grain patterns to create not only a stunning example of the classic shape itself, but a gorgeous piece of art any collector would be quite proud to include in his or her rotation.
