Sam Cui: Smooth Billiard with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-687-0020
Despite it being one of the most commonly-fashioned shapes on the shape chart, the Billiard shape still enjoys immense popularity as a form carvers turn to and reimagine time and time again. Sam Cui, for example, has here presented us with a rendition that seems to draw inspiration from both the Danish and Japanese schools, with its softly-tapered bowl paired to a bamboo shank extension and shorter, arrow-straight saddle stem. It presents a sense of subtle asymmetry too, a result of its rim topped with a partial plateau, and the knuckles of the honey blonde stuff operate in perfect rhythm with the composition at large, bookended as they are between two slender, merlot-colored ring spacers. Lovely work.
