Scott Thile: Smooth Bent Bulldog (OP2) (287) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-615-0015

The Opus designation isn't a grade, but Scott's unique manner of classifying certain shapes. If it's a form that he has a special fondness for, and anticipates making a fair amount of during his career, it will get an Opus number. His Bulldog/Rhodesian shapes get an Opus 2 (OP2) stamp, and this awesome Opus is one composition that will not only appeal to the widest variety of audiences, but will have many humming the leitmotif well after the curtain is drawn.

Adroitly executed in a manner that calls to mind both the best work of Giancarlo Guidi, as well as a bit reminiscent (to me) of Pohlmann's John Bull, this modernist beauty exudes a palpable sense of forward movement within a totality that is amazingly intuitive and inviting (no mean feat, given the edge we usually sense as we approach uber-modernity). Scott's stain does a yeoman's job of lending an additional vibrancy to the four-alarm flame grain and bodacious birdseye which drapes the entirety of the bowl and shank, and there is zero bleed through of the flame past the double bead. A "classic: reborn"? "Yeah, baby, YEAH!".
