Scott Thile: Sandblasted Strawberry Wood Bent Apple (FH) (S) (408) Tobacco Pipe

Scott Thile makes a well-executed classic, and this piece is no different. What is different fits right into our 2018 American Carver Expo's theme: "alternative materials." Made from strawberry wood, this is a strikingly different piece from his usual fare, while also maintaining his well-known style. Strawberry wood, in itself, it a unique material — compared to briar, its grain patterns are often wild and unpredictable, making for some unique textures when sandblasted. This piece has a bit more consistent graining to it, with almost briar-like growth rings stacked along both flanks, breaking up a bit on the right. It's all been finished in one of his warmer, red-hued sandblasts, which pairs perfectly with a creamy accent and cumberland mouthpiece. As far as an Expo contribution, it's a gorgeous piece, and one that suits the goal — creating something new, without sacrificing anything by way of Scott's unique style.
