Scott Thile: Smooth Volcano (FH) (438)

Product Number: 002-615-0061

Scott Thile is well experienced with the Volcano shape, and this example is a stunning representation of his best work. The flowing ridgelines running down the underside of the shank and around the heel beautifully demarcate the tapering flanks from the slightly domed underside, which is a mesmerizing display of swirling birdseye. Few shapes better illuminate the natural grain of briar, and here we see the consistent vertical grain rising up to the sides of the pipe in contrast stain to further highlight the excellent briar quality.

The transition is softly curved and joins the bowl and shank in a natural flow, the shank rising to the stylized and offset half-saddle mouthpiece, whose soft down-curve promises excellent balance. Visually, it complements the structure of the bowl with a slight expansion before the more thinly constructed taper. When viewed from above or below, this pipe's elongated character is more pronounced, the bowl longer than it is wide, and the rim is chamfered inward toward the tobacco chamber for easy filling. A shape made for comfortable smoking, this Thile composition is dramatically attractive, with all the attributes of construction by a seasoned and experienced craftsman.
