Scott Thile: Smooth Bent Egg (FH) (446)
Product Number: 002-615-0065
Scott Thile is a man of many talents, an autodidactic learner who masters whatever he turns his hands to. Already an accomplished musician and woodworker with his own shop, Scott became interested in pipe making and learned the craft quite quickly. He models his work after American interpretations of the Danish design school, and influences of carvers like Todd Johnson and Adam Davidson are clear in this svelte bent Egg. a well-rounded, soft profile with a lifted heel, a gradual transition, and a shank that first tapers then flares subtly, all work in concert to exude an organicism, as if this pipe grew naturally on an exotic, pipe-producing tree.
Thile brings the grain to life with a warm auburn stain, the high contrast combining with a smooth finish to accentuate upswept flame grain all around the bowl. The stummel is balanced, both physically and visually, by one of Scott's signature hand-cut half-saddle stems, turning down just slightly to offer a comfortable smoking posture. A light weight belies a respectable amount of chamber volume, offering a pipe that is comfortable to clench for a luxurious smoke.- Joel Balyeat
