Scott Thile: Smooth Volcano (FH) (573) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-615-0118

An adroit woodworker long before he ever considered pipe making, Scott Thile has been a mainstay in the pipe community for decades. Alongside his own line of handmade artisan pipes, Thile is also responsible for the establishment and maintenance of Pipedia, the world's most comprehensive online resource of pipe brands and makers. With tutelage and inspiration from the likes of Todd Johnson, Bruce Weaver, Jeff Gracik, Adam Davidson, and Brad Pohlmann, Thile has been fashioning handcrafted pipes since the early 2000s, and his design sense offers fresh interpretations of classic designs, with his Bulldog and Billiard variants especially lauded and collected worldwide.

It's easy to see why Thile chose to fashion a Volcano from this block of briar, and he's perfectly conformed the shape to maximize the grain: Tendrils of flame grain coincide with the bowl's dramatic taper toward the rim, and vertical grain follows the shank's gradual upward trajectory. It's a recognizable design from Thile and one he's made numerous times, marked by stout, muscular proportions throughout and a ridgeline around the base that frames the birdseye-laden underside. Moreover, the lines of the shank continue through the half saddle stem, curving upward to match the curvature of the transition. All dressed in a smooth, chestnut finish, this is a pipe that wonderfully combines beautiful shaping with beautiful briar to showcase the best of each.
