Sergey Ailarov: Smooth Long Shank Apple
Product Number: 002-789-0004
The most streamlined of all the pipes in this batch from Sergey Ailarov, this piece features a broad, stout-walled bowl set to a lengthy stretch of straight oval shank and saddle stem. The bowl itself is quite squat, merging the overall breadth and stature of the classic Pot with the more rounded, muscular curves of the Apple. That inherent muscularity is enhanced by the juxtaposition between it and the low-profile shank and stem, shifting even more visual weight to the bowl's plump cheeks and soft taper. The result is something of a hybrid between the Apple, Pot, and Lumberman designs — only smoothed out and softened through beautiful Danish lines. While Sergey's more elaborate Freehands are certainly impressive, there's just something about how he handles classic forms such as this, taking them and adapting them to fit his own vision, that immediately captures my attention. Beautiful work.
