Sergey Ailarov: Sandblasted Long Shank Bent Apple with Horn
Product Number: 002-789-0006
While many makers employ a long shank to lighten the overall silhouette of a design, Sergey has actually done the opposite here in this bent Apple, using its impressive length to emphasize the stout muscularity inherent in the form. He's realized such a feat by keeping the proportions of the transition and shank just as stout as the bowl, while lending it a continuous, curling gesture which allows the line of the underside to flow uninterrupted from the lifting heel, along the arcing underside, all the way to the horn mount. What's more, Sergey's cinched the transition ever-so-subtly, in turn lending even more emphasis to the cheeking of the bowl — almost Heeschen-like in the way the flanks softly protrude out from the central axis. Given all the above, I'd say Ailarov's choice of finish here was a smart one: a jet-black sandblast paired to an extra dark horn mount. The combination reveals the block's natural beauty in the form of rippling rings of grain, yet keeps the depth light and the palette dark in order to preserve the shape's beautiful lines and soft curves. Recommended.
