Sergey Ailarov: Sandblasted Acorn
Product Number: 002-789-0010
This kind of curling, tight-knit design isn't out of the ordinary for Sergey, though it does present an asymmetric, almost Danish-style design that we haven't seen before. While the bowl itself is plump and softly tapered, the shank offers a bit of additional complexity, driving home the multi-faceted artistry inherent in the design. Along the right flank, it is rounded and easy, following a smooth, fairly traditional line from end to transition; on the left, however, it is flared and pinched at the edge, creating a leading, teardrop ridge that flows and then melts into the plump curvature bowl. The grain, likewise, is beyond impressive, fitting naturally to each line and curve of the design. That shouldn't come to much surprise. Sergey has not only cited the Danish greats as sources of inspiration, but he's also expressed his belief that the block of briar itself is a major indicator in how the pipe will be shaped. That natural appreciation is clearly evident here in this Acorn rendition.
