Sergey Dyomin: Sandblasted Chubby Bent Apple
I knew in an instant upon glancing over this batch of portly briars from Russian carver Sergey Dyomin, that this bent Apple was my absolute favorite. If the past few years is an indication of the popularity of compact and stoutly proportioned pipes, it is no surprise that so many carvers have tried their hand at chubby renditions of classic shapes. The chamber walls are delightfully thick and will do well to insulate the surprisingly capacious chamber; leaving the pipe cool to the touch during the smoke. Aside from the darling design, I am especially drawn to the stem work. The bite is ideal; thin enough to be extremely comfortable in the teeth, without being so thin as to cause concern (a difficult line to walk). The shape and profile of the button itself are unique and refreshing and the slotting is precise and well-executed. Between the stem work, and the overall engineering, it is obvious that great care went into the construction, and that a Sergey Dyomin briar will smoke as good as it looks!
