Sergey Dyomin: Sandblasted Asymmetric Bent Apple with Zebrawood
Product Number: 002-662-0020
The work of Sergey Dyomin, senior carver at PS Studio, student of Vladimir Grechukhin and artisan in his own right, has shown a distinct streamlined approach to shaping that evokes that of the industrial design-influenced aesthetic of the Russian master, though Dyomin's style is undoubtedly his own. His penchant for pushing shaping cues to the extreme is readily evident when looking at his chubbier, more stout shapes, though recently he's exhibited an affinity for more subtle, albeit playful and unique, detail work. What I'm referring to is his late predisposition for imbuing shapes with all manner of planar shifts, as showcased by this plump bent Apple. The curled, upturned shank ebbs purposefully toward the left flank, while the downturned saddle stem counters it with a rightward curve. The result is rather evocative of some deep sea creature, especially given the dense blasted rows of stacked ring-grain, finished in a smokey crimson contrast stain. The zebrawood accent at the stem base also provides a touch of warmth and dynamism to the composition. A lovely, comforting piece from Sergey Dyomin.
