Sergey Dyomin: Sandblasted Tomato
Product Number: 002-662-0028
It's no surprise that Sergey Dyomin excels at rendering compact pipes with chunky aesthetics, because he apprenticed with Vladimir Grechukhin, though he has certainly evolved with his own style. This sandblasted tomato is a fine example, with the bundled energy of the piece thrown forward to the bowl. The warm stain is irresistible, especially when highlighting grain as seen here, with concentric circles of growth rings rising gently from the heel to the rim in a low profile sandblast. The shank is wide with ridges on either side, rendering an even heartier look from above or below. In silhouette, however, it evokes a more streamlined appeal thanks to the beautifully shaped saddle mouthpiece and flattened shank. Ergonomically, it's a hand-pleaser, easily fitting whatever orientation is preferred. The piece sits nicely on a desk top as well, offering a little more efficiency and convenience.- Chuck Stanion
