Sergey Dyomin: Sandblasted Rhodesian
Product Number: 002-662-0029
There's something mesmerizing and minimalist about a pipe that throws nearly all of its visual weight forward to the bowl, as this piece from Sergey Dyomin demonstrates. The saddle stem is proportionally longer than saddles typically reflect, but the design here renders the stem visually insignificant. Instead, the eye travels to the stummel, with it's warm stain, low profile sandblast, and high waistline. The growth rings are so consistent that the double bead lines on the bowl could almost be part of the grain. These proportions are reminiscent of Vladimir Grechukhin, which should be no surprise, given that Sergey learned his craft from Grechukhin. However, Sergey has evolved his own aesthetic, with chubbier and more compact shapes. If you like a pipe that concentrates its energy on the bowl rather than the stem, Dyomin is a carver to watch.- Chuck Stanion
