Steve Liskey: Smooth Lovat

Product Number: 002-713-0002

With this first batch of pipes we've received from Steve Liskey, he's shown us plenty in the way of freehand chops, involving both all-briar shapes and those that include bamboo. He's also seen to it that we get to see what he can do with the classics, which is no small deal. Ask many an accomplished pipe artisan where the best place to learn proper pipemaking is, and they'll tell you it's in the simple classics. Their very simplicity demands a steady hand, sound eye, and understanding of line, form, and proportions to get just right, and makes it all the more obvious when something is off.

As it happens the Danish approach to classics is one of the fields of pipe design Liskey has a particular appreciation for, and judging by this Lovat (a classic shape Claudio Cavicchi has declared the most challenging of them all) Steve has got things down. I can see a bit of Danish here, and a bit of English, the former hinted at in the slightly higher position of the bowl relative to the transition, and the likewise just slightly lower-profile (i.e. shorter) stem-base, for example. Frankly, it's really hard for me to try and pin this briar as more one than the other. It isn't hard for me to pin it, simply, as very nice Lovat.
