Steve Liskey: Smooth Nautilus

Product Number: 002-713-0025

Though we have received a few more elaborate Freehand pieces from Steve Liskey, this is the first time we've ever seen a take on the Nautilus. A very evocative and organic shape by nature, it fits quite well within Steve's organic asymmetry theme, and he's just done a stellar job in his execution here. Rather than leaving a bridge of briar above the transition, which is often a characteristic of these Nautilus designs, Steve's actually framed the briar with a number of Blowfish like panels along the shank — the lines of which actually work to complete the snail-like curling gesture begun by the taper of the fore of the bowl. While adding a lot of dynamism to the form itself, these lines also serve to mark the transition between the showcased grain of each plane — with whirling birdseye kept to the flanks, and fiery crossgrain acting as a spine along the underside.
