Leveraging a background in woodworking and a keen eye for detail, Trey Rice crafts gorgeous pipes that draw on American, Danish, and English shaping traditions, but are singularly his own in execution. This Bulldog is one of Rice's more conservative offerings, possessing an outline that's balanced and traditional. Up front, a tall, full-bodied bowl stands atop a firm, angular heel and grows thick walls that rise to a broad, ridgeline-wrapped waist. From there, these walls taper swiftly to a flat rim, rounding out the bowl's upper frame and introducing some softness to the otherwise geometric form. A wide transition follows the bowl and marks the start of a sturdy diamond shank punctuated with a trim saddle stem. The base of the mouthpiece mirrors the structured look of the shank, enhancing the visual symmetry between the stummel and stem. A crisp, ruby-tinged sandblast completes the ensemble and reveals rugged grain across the briar's surface.
