While many of Kikuchi's pipes have been pieces designed to be as beautiful as they are interesting in hand, this bent Dublin sitter presents itself in a slightly different light. Is it a tactile experience? With a crisp sandblast, well-tapered bowl, and softly-rounded rim, the answer is undoubtedly: yes. But it hews closer to a minimalist style of pipemaking, using negative space along the line of shank and stem to create a fluid gesture, while the bowl itself is of a utilitarian ilk — purposefully designed to be smoked, and to sit when both hands must be free. Splendid work, and a piece that really shows the depth of Kikuchi's skill.
