Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Acorn (Kikuchi) (DE) (008) (2019)
Product Number: 002-623-4568
A graduate of one of Japan's most elite art universities, Asami Kikuchi is one of three artisans who comprise the Tsuge Ikebana workshop. Each carver fashions their own individual pipes but come together under the same Ikebana name — a moniker taken from a form of traditional Japanese flower arrangement, centered on encouraging an appreciation of and peacefulness through nature. Ikebana pipes offer a similar natural stillness and calm, boasting stunning craftsmanship and gorgeous, naturally inclined aesthetics.
Kikuchi's personal style often caters toward dynamic shapes that contrast smooth, flowing lines against muscular, rounded proportions. This Acorn here, though, stands out in that portfolio, the Japanese carver having opted for a more streamlined sense. The subtle curve through the stem and shank still maintain Asami's typical dynamism, urging the eye toward the bowl, but the proportions remain comparably trim — the bowl poses a more upright, slender demeanor from out of a crisply defined transition. Such a design cue is reminiscent of classic Danish shapes, though Kikuchi has added in a subtly more organic, Japanese style through the flowing shank and stem combination. Marked by a rounded rim, the bowl displays a lovely array of vertical grain, kept more reserved and understated thanks to the dark, ruby-tinged contrast stain.-Truett Smith
