Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Acorn (Fukuda) (L) (217) (2017)
Product Number: 002-623-4589
Kazuhiro Fukuda has supervised the Tsuge Ikebana workshop for years and notably studied under Sixten Ivarsson and Jørgen Larsen when Tsuge sent some of its carvers to Denmark to learn from artisan pipe makers in that country. Fukuda returned to Japan with new knowledge about engineering and artistry regarding pipe making and the Ikebana line was soon established. Ikebana literally means "living flowers" and takes its inspiration from a traditional form of flower arrangements, highly respected in Japan. Much like its namesake, Ikebana pipes promote an appreciation for natural forms by crafting beautiful, minimalist artisan pipes that are often inspired by nature.
One such shape is presented here in the form of a compact Acorn crafted by Fukuda and is among the smallest renditions of the shape I've encountered from the master carver. It readily reflects Fukuda's penchant for bulbous, organic designs, displaying rather robust proportions throughout. The bowl exhibits a subtle taper from the rim down to the subtle heel that's barely perceptible and ever-so-slightly droops past the shank. Said shank seamlessly continues the bowl's heartiness, curling upward to meet the gracefully downturned stem, which features a single expansion disc to mirror the shape of the shank face and introduce negative space. Such a design choice allows for the stummel to be the focal point of the composition, and judging from the stellar flame grain on display, it was undoubtedly a wise choice. The rich, honey-blonde contrast stain accentuates all of the gorgeous flame grain that envelopes the bowl and even the sides of the shank.- Jeffery Sitts
