Tsuge Ikebana: Partially Sandblasted Volcano (Fukuda) (J) (043) (2016)

Product Number: 002-623-4592

Tsuge is Japan's premier pipe maker and has been since the mid-1900s. In the '70s, the marque sent several of its artisans to Denmark to learn from experienced Danish carvers. Kazuhiro Fukuda was one of those Tsuge artisans, and he spent time learning under Sixten Ivarsson, returning to Japan with newfound pipe-making knowledge and experience. Fukuda now manages Tsuge's high-grade Ikebana workshop — each Ikebana pipe fashioned completely by one of the workshop's three artisans.

Other Volcano renditions we've received from Tsuge Ikebana were fashioned by Asami Kikuchi, but this one is from Fukuda himself. That said, the styles are somewhat similar between Kikuchi's versions and this Fukuda iteration. Most notably, the shank here is broadly expanded, wider than the bowl itself as the tapering bowl seems to be set on top of the curling shank. Crisp panels comprise the outer edges of the shank, wrapping all the way around the bowl to further the visually separate aesthetic, and the grain across the bowl and topside of the shank is immaculate. For a surprise of contrast, then, Fukuda sandblasted the entire underside and dressed it in a dark stain.
