Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Bent Apple (Kikuchi) (G) (027) (2021)
Product Number: 002-623-4621
Asami Kikuchi notably attended Tama Art University, one of Japan's most distinguished art schools, and shortly thereafter found herself crafting some wooden sculptures for the Tsuge workshop. Her talent was immediately evident, and she was entranced by the forms of the pipes and accepted the opportunity to apprentice under Kazuhiro Fukuda. She excelled, and with her talents turned to pipe making, results such as this Apple have materialized in her hands. This smooth rendition features a forward-ebbing inclination and a round shank gradually expanding as it leaves the tight cheeking at the transition and moves upward to meet the saddle mouthpiece, which continues the expansion briefly before immediately reducing to the long, flat curvature of the stem. A vivid contrast stain highlights the grain, which consistently circumscribes the bowl in tight tendrils. Vertically compressed and balanced for both visual appeal and effortless hands-free smoking, it's a spectacular rendition that's difficult to put down.- Chuck Stanion
