Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Bent Dublin (Kikuchi) (E) (025) (2021)
Product Number: 002-623-4623
One of three artisans at Tsuge Ikebana, Asami Kikuchi became fascinated with woodworking in college and began making small wooden sculptures. Needing access to a workshop, she reached out to Tsuge, became fascinated with handmade pipes, and soon apprenticed under resident master pipe maker Kazuhiro Fukuda, after which she became a full-time Ikebana carver.
Kikuchi's style tends toward sleek, minimalist renditions, with this bent Dublin being a fine example. The low-lying, forward-urging bowl is rounded and bulbous with a lifting heel and inflated rim, all of which indicate a hint of Danish shaping influence. The sweeping undercurve of the stummel harmonizes with that of the slender stem in the degree of supple bend for a rather dynamic profile that boasts plenty of momentum with the pipe's softened lines ebbing through the bowl. Though substantial in hand and appearing muscular when viewed from above, the Zulu-like silhouette is yet neat and tidy.
Asami has dressed this piece in a rich, vibrant contrast stain that does well to highlight a bevy of gorgeous birdseye enveloping the rim and shank, while vertical grain engulfs the bowl. This is an astonishing pipe on so many levels from a truly skilled and creative Ikebana artisan.-Angela Robertson
