Tsuge Ikebana: Sandblasted Dublin with Bamboo (Kikuchi) (E) (024) (2021)
Product Number: 002-623-4625
Most of the pipes we receive by Asami Kikuchi of the Tsuge Ikebana workshop are smooth, but she saw the incredible ring grain inherent in this briar and cbrought it to life with a crisp sandblast. Heir apparent since 2013 to resident master Kazuhiro Fukuda, Asami is a formally trained artist and sculptor.
Her unique style breathes beautifully in this lithe straight Dublin, with a discretely flaring bowl perched at the end of a pencil-thin shank and stem. Incredibly tight stacks of ring grain climb the slightly oval-shaped bowl to a broad, domed rim with blasted birdseye and a chamfered declination around the tobacco chamber. Three knuckles of pale bamboo combine with a svelte, elongated saddle stem to achieve an overall length approaching seven inches yet a weight under 40 grams. In profile, I see that Asami has mirrored the profile of the bamboo in both the stem base and abbreviated shank, achieving an organic aesthetic that makes it look like this pipe grew naturally on a tree. For anyone looking for a long, light smoker with a high level of organic beauty, this may be the perfect pipe.- Joel Balyeat
