Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Long Shank Bent Apple (Ohi) (G) (201) (2015) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-623-4639

Ikebana translates to "living flowers," and is a reference to the highest form of the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The prestigiously named Tsuge Ikebana is Tsuge's premier workshop, and three artisans work there: Asami Kikuchi, Yoshirou Ohi, and Kazuhiro Fukuda. They make every pipe by hand, showcasing distinctively Japanese interpretations of Danish shapes, and each maker possesses their own unique style.

This bent Apple by Yoshirou Ohi of Tsuge Ikebana features a plump bowl that is set at a gentle forward cant, imbuing this robust composition with a palpable sense of momentum. Furthermore, the bowl is dressed in a warm auburn smooth finish, which highlights cross grain on the flanks and birdseye on the fore and aft; however, patches of plateau also adorn the fore and aft, offering an intriguing flourish of texture. Moreover, the lengthy shank concludes at a broad shank face, helping to balance the compositional weight of the bulging bowl at the fore. This piece is rounded out by a short saddle stem crafted from jet-black vulcanite, its subtle sinuousness accentuating the profile's active posture.
