Tsuge Ikebana: ***Smooth Bent Dublin (Fukuda) (K) (020) (2019) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-623-4670

The Tsuge Ikebana workshop consists of three artisans — Kazuhiro Fukuda, Yoshirou Ohi, and Asami Kikuchi — who individually craft pipes under the Ikebana name. Kazuhiro Fukuda is the workshop's supervisor and was one of the initial carvers that Tsuge sent to Denmark to study under Sixten Ivarsson. With decades of pipe making experience, Fukuda is a venerated carver, and his mastery of the craft is on full display with this bent Dublin.

A stylized rendition of the shape-chart standard, this piece boasts a stout, thick-walled bowl that blooms at the fore of an upturned oval shank and a demurely curved saddle stem. The bowl rises from its lifted heel and reaches upward to a broad, lenticular rim, with this rim possessing a subtle undulation that adds a touch of asymmetrical flourish to the shape's profile. The shape's lifted heel and steeply curved fore wall lend the bowl a forward-surging posture that keeps the entire shape looking dynamic and active in profile. A gorgeous, honey-blonde smooth finish completes the ensemble and highlights gorgeous flame grain across the bowl's flanks, with tight whorls of birdseye across the rim.
