Tsuge Ikebana: Sandblasted Billiard (Fukuda) (G) (064) (2021) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-623-4680
The Tsuge Ikebana workshop consists of three artisans — Kazuhiro Fukuda, Yoshirou Ohi, and Asami Kikuchi — who individually craft pipes under the Ikebana name. Kazuhiro Fukuda is the workshop's supervisor and was one of the initial carvers that Tsuge sent to Denmark to study under Sixten Ivarsson. With decades of pipe making experience, Fukuda is a venerated carver, and his mastery of the craft is on full display with this Billiard.
While understated and fairly traditional in appearance, this piece offers precisely balanced proportions, expert craftsmanship, and handsome finishing work. It perches a tall, stocky bowl at the fore of an arrow-straight shank-and-stem arrangement for a crisp, minimalist appearance in profile, immediately capturing the eye with its simple sophistication. Free of any unnecessary visual noise or accents, the shaping is allowed to speak for itself, and it does so quite well. A crisp, dark sandblast commends the briar and coaxes out rippling waves of grain across the surface of the bowl. The jet-black stain harmonizes with the color of the vulcanite mouthpiece for a unified presentation.
