Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Tomato (Fukuda) (Q) (123) (2021) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-623-4688

Meaning "living flowers" and named in reference to Japan's lauded flower-arrangement art form, Tsuge's Ikebana workshop comprises three artisans who individually carve pipes under the Ikebana name. A similar, organic aesthetic often unites the workshop's pipes, regularly showcasing distinctively Japanese interpretations of Danish shapes, yet each carver retains their own personal design style. This particular piece was fashioned by the workshop's supervisor, Kazuhiro Fukuda, who helped found the Ikebana line and also was one of several Tsuge artisans to travel to Denmark in the 1960s to learn artisan pipe making firsthand from iconic Danish masters.

A plump Tomato shape, this pipe combines organic charm with soft lines and a genteel disposition. The rounded, squat bowl stands at the end of an oval shank, which is slightly elongated to add a streamlined sense to the otherwise muscular form. Proportionally balanced, this piece is a lesson in reservation and elegance, offering gentle lines and a curvaceous overall aesthetic. Every line is harmonious — the stem's slight bend balancing the shank's subtle upward curve — and the bowl is crowned with a tasteful ring of natural briar plateau. Stunning grain has earned this piece the workshop's Q grade, and it's wrapped in vertical grain throughout, all highlighted by a vivid, natural finish.
