Tsuge Ikebana: Smooth Cobra (Kikuchi) (H) (018) (21) Tobacco Pipe

In profile, this Cobra from Asami Kikuchi of the Tsuge Ikebana workshop presents the fluid curvature associated with the Horn shape, but from an aerial perspective, quite a different form is revealed. Ikebana is a term referring to the highest form of flower arrangement in Japan, and like flower arrangements, this piece presents a different form from different angles.

Two highly stylized panels dominate the flanks, riding the extraordinarily wide shank up the curvature of the shape and terminating at the broad, domed rim. It's as though the inherent Horn shape is enhanced by wings along its sides — an evocation to a cobra's characteristic hood. Horizontal grain graces that rim in juxtaposition to the wide birdseye characterizing the top of the shank and the underside's curved panel. The arc of that panel is echoed by the end of the shank, which curves toward the center. A stylized mouthpiece emerges from that wide shank with a single expansion ring and a supple, balancing downturn, predicting fine smoking experiences in a unique rendition by one of Japan's most talented carvers. This "H" stamped piece represents some of Kikuchi's finest work, clearly evident in her masterful shaping of the briar, which itself boasts an array of excellent, and perfectly oriented, flame grain and birdseye across the variegated surfaces of the stummel.
