Wandi Riyadi: Smooth Tomato (4110) Tobacco Pipe

In 2011, while working as an IT engineer, Indonesian native Wandi Riyadi began smoking a pipe and became enamored with the hobby and all that it entailed. He soon tried his hand at making a pipe, and before long, he was obsessed. He eventually left his job and became a full-time pipe maker, leaving behind his previous career to chase his creative interests. One of Indonesia's few pipe makers, Ryadi has established himself as an artisan of note, and garnered an international audience of discerning collectors. His work takes inspiration from Japanese and Danish mastesr, like the Ivarssons, Bo Nordh, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and as such, his work is often highly organic, though he does craft more conservative pieces as well. This Tomato showcases Riyadi's deft ability to craft unique forms in a distinctive and eye-catching fashion.

A compact, tight-knit design, this piece measures less than five inches long, making it perfect for on-the-go smoking, especially when considering the subtly curved mouthpiece. Shape-wise, this piece features a broad, thick-walled bowl that tapers from its wide heel to its slightly tauter rim. As it tapers, the bowl produces a low-set waistline and supple curves that conform naturally to the hand. The bowl's cheeked transition marks the start of the shank's quick flare, which terminates at a face that resembles a Reuleaux triangle. A ridgeline wraps around the base and face of the shank and adds a touch of structure to the shape's otherwise soft contours. A walnut smooth finish dresses the stummel and highlights gorgeous flame grain across the bowl's flanks.
